The truth behind grandma's fall

After hearing about his mother’s bruises, Michael couldn’t stop thinking about how vulnerable she was. It was clear she needed more help than they were providing, so he decided to hire a professional caregiver. He felt terrible about not acting sooner and wanted to make sure nothing like this ever happened again.
Though Cathy initially insisted she was doing just fine, Michael sat down with her and explained how much it meant to him that she stay safe. After some convincing, she reluctantly agreed to try having someone help with daily tasks. What none of them expected was that this solution would create a whole new problem—and a shocking one at that.
Before officially hiring the caregiver, Michael and Loretta made sure to meet her in person. Nicole seemed perfect—she had glowing references, a kind demeanor, and years of experience caring for elderly clients. Everything about her appeared trustworthy, and they were relieved to finally have some extra support for Cathy.
At first, things seemed to be going well. Cathy told Michael she liked Nicole and appreciated the help with chores and getting around. Michael felt comforted by her words and believed they had made the right decision. But that peace of mind was short-lived. The next time he visited, something was terribly wrong again.

Michael decided to stop by Cathy’s house for a casual visit one afternoon. As soon as she opened the door, his heart dropped. Her face was bruised again, even worse than before. “Mom, what happened?” he asked, embracing her gently, stunned by the repeat injuries.
She looked away, avoiding eye contact, and said nothing at first. The silence between them was heavy. Once inside, Michael noticed she moved more slowly than usual, wincing slightly with every step. It was clear she was in pain, but more than that, it seemed like she was hiding something—something serious.
Michael led Cathy to the couch and encouraged her to rest. “Just sit here, Mom. Don’t push yourself,” he said softly, trying not to sound too alarmed. Watching her carefully, he noticed how fragile she looked—her strength was fading, and her spirit seemed dimmed.
Cathy gave him a faint smile and made a light joke to ease the tension, but it only made Michael more anxious. He sat beside her, silently processing everything. The bruises, the excuses, the strange silences—it all pointed to something deeper. Michael knew he couldn’t ignore it anymore. He had to figure out what was really happening.
