The truth behind grandma's fall

Cathy insisted that the bruises were nothing serious. “Michael, I’m just being clumsy,” she said with a soft laugh, trying to brush off the situation. “I’m getting older, a little forgetful, that’s all.” Though she tried to sound reassuring, her words didn’t sit well with him. Michael nodded out of respect, but he couldn’t hide the concern on his face.
He gently replied, “Mom, I don’t want to see you get hurt again. We really need to figure out what’s going on.” Cathy tried to steer the conversation in another direction, but Michael’s thoughts remained focused. Deep down, he felt something wasn’t right—and he couldn’t ignore the feeling anymore.
The following morning, over a quiet breakfast, Michael and Loretta revisited the troubling events. Michael laid it all out—the repeated bruises, the strange silences, the uneasy feeling he couldn’t shake. “Something’s off, Loretta. This just doesn’t add up,” he said as he stared down at his coffee.
Loretta leaned in, her concern growing with every word. “We can’t just keep hoping it will stop on its own,” she replied firmly. “We need to find out what’s really going on before it gets worse.” Both of them knew time was of the essence—and that doing nothing was no longer an option.

Determined to help, Loretta offered to take a week off work to stay with Cathy. “I’ve been saving some vacation days. I can be with her every day and make sure she’s okay,” she told Michael. He was grateful and relieved to have someone so committed watching over his mother.
“Thanks, Loretta,” he said sincerely. “I think with you there, we might finally get some answers.” They both knew that this wasn’t just about observation—it was about protecting Cathy and getting to the truth. It was a plan made out of both love and urgency.
Loretta had a strategy. She would act like it was just a casual visit so that Nicole wouldn’t become suspicious. “I’ll act normal, hang out like I’m just keeping Mom company,” she explained. The goal was to blend in while staying alert, documenting anything that felt out of place.
Michael agreed but warned, “Don’t let on that you’re watching her—just keep an eye on everything.” With that, Loretta packed a small bag and prepared to move into Cathy’s home for the week. They were both determined to find out if Nicole was hiding something—and what that might be.
