The truth behind grandma's fall

Loretta packed a few bags and moved into Cathy’s house under the pretense of wanting to spend more quality time with her. “I’ll be here all week, Mom. Let’s enjoy each other’s company,” she said with a warm smile. Cathy welcomed the idea and didn’t seem suspicious about the extended stay, happy to have some extra companionship around the house.
Behind the scenes, however, Loretta had a mission. She discreetly kept a notebook where she recorded every detail of her observations. From Nicole’s arrival times to her tone of voice, Loretta made sure nothing slipped through the cracks. This wasn’t just a visit—it was an undercover effort to protect Cathy and uncover the truth.
Loretta made it her priority to stay close whenever Nicole was present, carefully watching the interactions between caregiver and patient. She stayed alert but casual, trying not to raise suspicion as she observed the way Nicole treated Cathy during meals, chores, and daily care.
To her surprise, Nicole acted completely professional. She was polite, attentive, and kind. Yet, Loretta couldn’t afford to be complacent. Even with everything looking so perfect on the surface, she reminded herself that appearances can be deceiving—and that her vigilance needed to remain sharp.

After several days of close monitoring, Loretta couldn’t find anything unusual. Nicole continued to do her job efficiently, and Cathy responded well to her presence. Their interactions seemed warm and respectful, and there were no signs of abuse or discomfort.
Despite this, Loretta still felt something was off. The consistency of normalcy felt almost too perfect. “Something happened to Cathy before, and I need to find out what,” she thought. She remained committed to staying alert, even if the evidence so far didn’t support her concerns.
Nicole’s work performance appeared flawless. She handled Cathy’s daily routines—bathing, meals, medications—with confidence and kindness. Loretta watched closely and couldn’t spot a single moment of carelessness or aggression. Cathy even seemed happier with the added help.
Still, Loretta held her doubts close. “Maybe I was wrong about Nicole,” she considered privately, though she didn’t share the thought with Michael. They both had agreed not to jump to conclusions. The last thing they wanted was to miss something by letting their guard down too soon.
