That evening, over a quiet dinner, Loretta finally shared everything she had witnessed with Michael. She explained Nicole’s strange behavior, the hushed phone call, and the ominous words she overheard. Michael’s face darkened with concern as he listened closely.

“We can’t ignore this anymore,” Loretta said firmly. Michael nodded, agreeing that they needed to speak directly to Nicole. They decided to confront her the next day and find out what she had been hiding. The hope was that a direct approach might force the truth out.

The next morning, they sat Nicole down in the living room. Michael’s voice was calm but serious as he began, “Nicole, we need to talk about something unusual we noticed.” Nicole’s expression shifted from surprise to caution as she glanced between them.

Loretta wasted no time recounting the details of the phone call she overheard. “We just want to know what’s really going on,” she added. Nicole’s reaction, however, wasn’t defensive or apologetic—it was something else entirely, and it left them even more unsettled.

Nicole appeared visibly hurt by their questions. Her voice quivered as she insisted she had done nothing wrong. “I don’t understand why you would accuse me of something like this,” she said, eyes starting to fill with tears. “I’ve only ever cared for Mrs. Cathy and done my job with complete dedication.”

Michael and Loretta exchanged uneasy glances. They weren’t sure whether Nicole was genuinely emotional or simply trying to deflect suspicion. While her reaction seemed sincere, a lingering sense of doubt remained. Was this all just a clever act?

Trying to clear her name, Nicole explained the call had nothing to do with Cathy. She claimed it was a private family issue that she didn’t want to discuss. “I’m really sorry if it came off the wrong way,” she said, wiping her eyes. “But please understand—I care about Mrs. Cathy deeply.”

Loretta felt her resolve weaken slightly. Nicole’s emotional response and calm explanation almost made her believe the misunderstanding was their fault. Still, the situation didn’t sit right. Michael spoke gently but firmly: “All we care about is Mom’s safety.”
