The truth behind grandma's fall

Initially, it all seemed like a natural part of aging. Grandma Cathy had started slowing down, and mobility was becoming a challenge. At first, she used a cane around the house and upgraded to a walker when going out. It was hard to watch, but manageable.

Eventually, even that wasn’t enough. Cathy had to transition to a wheelchair for daily life. Though she tried to act like it didn’t bother her, Michael could tell it hurt her pride. Still, she kept her spirits up and tried to maintain as much independence as possible despite the change.

Michael and Loretta did everything they could to help Cathy adjust. “You’re doing great, Mom,” Michael would often say, doing his best to keep her morale up. They visited every day, sometimes just to check in, other times to drop off a hot meal or fresh groceries.

They even funded minor renovations—adding ramps, widening doorways, and installing a stair lift to make her home safer. Cathy seemed to be doing well, and everyone thought she was adjusting. But beneath the surface, something strange was unfolding, and none of them saw it coming.

One afternoon, Loretta came through the front door visibly shaken. She didn’t even take off her coat before rushing over to Michael. “Honey, it’s your mom… I don’t even know how to explain it,” she said, her voice trembling. Michael’s heart immediately sank. His mind raced with worst-case scenarios as he asked, “What happened? Is she hurt?”

Loretta sat down beside him, trying to collect herself before speaking. She had just come back from dropping off some soup for Cathy. When his mother opened the door, Loretta was stunned—Cathy’s face was badly bruised, with dark marks around her eyes and cheeks. It didn’t look like a simple fall, and Loretta knew something wasn’t right.

When Loretta asked about the injuries, Cathy quickly brushed it off. She told Loretta she had simply fallen out of her wheelchair and that it wasn’t a big deal. Despite the severity of the bruises, she insisted it was just a clumsy accident and downplayed the entire event. Her calm tone didn’t match her battered appearance, which made the explanation hard to believe.

Still, Cathy was adamant. She said it had happened quickly and that she’d be more careful next time. “Please don’t worry,” she said with a forced smile. Though Loretta was deeply unsettled, she respected Cathy’s wishes and didn’t push further—at least not yet. But the unease lingered in the back of her mind.

Territorial by nature and eager to be the center of attention, Chihuahuas can be surprisingly aggressive and stubborn, especially if they feel their status is threatened.
